The Innovathon MODERATE took place on October 24th at the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Gijón, bringing together students, researchers, and professionals for an inspiring day of innovation around data and energy efficiency.
The event was jointly organized by Veolia, the CTIC Chair for Digital Transformation of the University of Oviedo, and the European project MODERATE, which focuses on leveraging data to improve energy management and decision-making in buildings.
In total, 19 participants — including 8 women — formed six multidisciplinary teams to tackle a real-world data challenge:
Predicting heating demand and biomass consumption across several facilities.
A Data-Driven Challenge
The hackathon was structured in three phases:
-
Modeling – Developing models that relate Heating Degree Days (HDD) to energy demand and biomass consumption.
-
Prediction – Integrating data from the AEMET API (Spanish State Meteorological Agency) to estimate the weekly biomass consumption.
-
Visualization – Creating a dashboard to display the predicted results for each facility.
Participants showed great creativity and technical skills, delivering innovative and practical solutions within a limited timeframe.
Recognition for the Winning Team
The winning team, composed of Ana Belén, Gonzalo, and Juan Antonio, stood out for the accuracy of their model and the clarity of their visualization. Congratulations to them — and to all participants — for their commitment, teamwork, and enthusiasm.
