MODERATE Featured on BUILD UP: From Data Silos to Smart Buildings

The European Commission’s BUILD UP portal has published a new article spotlighting the MODERATE project and its mission to break down data silos in the European building sector.

Buildings account for around 40% of the EU’s energy use and CO₂ emissions, yet much of the operational data needed to improve their performance remains locked in fragmented, proprietary systems. This lack of interoperability has long limited the sector’s ability to scale digital innovation, optimise energy performance and accelerate decarbonisation.

The article highlights how MODERATE is addressing this challenge through an open, privacy-preserving marketplace for building energy data. By combining federated data infrastructure, advanced machine-learning-based data synthetisation and open-source analytics tools, the platform transforms fragmented datasets into actionable insights.

A key innovation is the generation of high-quality synthetic datasets that preserve the statistical value of real data while protecting sensitive information. This enables researchers, policymakers, energy service providers and technology developers to test solutions, develop services and drive innovation without compromising privacy.

Validated across thousands of buildings in multiple European countries, the MODERATE marketplace supports applications such as fault detection, energy benchmarking, solar potential assessment, local energy community planning and measurement and verification of energy savings.

The feature on BUILD UP underscores MODERATE’s contribution to advancing digitalisation in line with Europe’s energy and climate objectives and strengthening the foundations for data-driven renovation strategies.
